11th Quadrennial Lay Convention to be held in Fayetteville, NC

Get Ready! Get Ready! Get Ready! In approximately one month all roads will lead to Fayetteville, NC for the 11th Quadrennial Lay Convocation to be held March 19-21, 2020. The Eastern North Carolina Episcpal Distirct will serve as the host;  Bishop Kenneth Monroe, Presiding Prelate, Mrs. Shelia Monroe, Missionary Supervisor and Mr. Hank Dobson, Regional Director. The Simon Temple AME Zion Church will serve as the host site.

Dr. Mary Matthews, our International President; Mrs. Lele Davis, First Vice President/Convocation Chair, and the members of the Steering Committee are working diligently to make the Lay Convocation exciting, informative and a successful event for everyone in attendance. We hope you are excited and getting ready to join us!

The CLC Convocation is the place to be for all laity and General Conference delegates (clergy and lay) as we prepare for the 2020 General Conference. If you are a first time delegate, an alternate or a young adult attending the General Conference, the Convocation has been planned with you in mind. The session have been designed to make sure you are informed and equipped! Don’t let this opportunity to “Know before you go” pass you by! The Convocation theme is Projecting, Preparing, Planning-for Empowered Participation! 

How much is Registration? We are glad that you have asked… Early bird registration is $135.00 until February 15, 2020.  Late and onsite registration is $150.00.

Convocation Transportation

The CLC will assist you with your arrival to and departure from Fayetteville with service from the Fayetteville Regional Airport only. Please complete a travel form and email to Mr. Hank Dobson (hankley1@suddenlink.com),  to schedule your arrival and departure dates. The transportation form can be downloaded from the CLC web site. 


Convocation Lodging

The Wingate Hotel (910.826.9200) is located at 4182 Sycamore Dairy Road. Room rates are also $119.00 +13% tax. The registration code for the Wingate Hotel is Connectional Lay Council Convocation. 

The Comfort Inn Fayetteville located at 1922 Skibo Road, Fayetteville, NC, 28314. Room rates are $82 +13% tax. The registration code for the Comfort Inn is Connectional Lay Council Convocation.

Morning Watch: Mr. William Manning, CLC Chaplain and the Morning Watch Prayer Team invite you to join them in prayer and praise using the CLC prayer line: 857.232.0156 and the code is: 502866. If you are not able to attend the Convocation, all are welcome to participate by calling in from wherever you are to join us in prayer during the Convocation. The Morning Watch call will be held 6:00 am Friday, March 20th and Saturday March 21st. Remember to share with others. 

Lay Academy: Dr. Joyce Edwards and the Education Committee have planned an exciting Lay Academy to assist you in preparation for the 2020 General Conference.

Mr. Hank Dobson, Host Regional Director and the ENC Episcopal District have planned a Welcome Program and dinner.  The Holy Communion and Worship Service will follow. Bishop W. Darin Moore, Presiding Prelate of the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal District will bring the Communion Message.

Are You Excited Yet? If not, just take a look at our presenters and speakers! The Reverend Dr. Otis T. McMillan will open our Convocation with an Empowerment Evangelistic presentation. Our presenters include the Reverend Dr. J. Elvin Sadler will discuss Resolutions, Voting and Dr. Shirley Welch will inform all of the General Conference Budget. The Reverend Dr. Gregory R. Smith will discuss Administrative Boards of the General Conference. Dr. Yvonne Tracey and Mrs. Lula Howard will present General Conference Resolutions from the IM&L Association/CLC Summit. Dr. Sheila Quintana will present the CLC By-laws and legislation and Dr. Frances Jackson will address parliamentary procedures. A panel will be available for Questions and Answers.

Our speakers include: The Honorable Cheri Beasley, Chief Justice of NC will be the Challenge Luncheon speaker; Mrs. Gelenia Frencher, Missionary Supervisor of the Southwestern Delta will be the Heritage Prayer Breakfast speaker (You are encouraged to your wear African attire); The Reverend Dr. Vergel Lattimore, President of Hood Theological Seminary will be the speaker for the George J. Leake Scholarship Luncheon. The scholarship luncheon tickets are $25.00 per person, all proceeds will go to the Bishop George J. Leake III Endowed Scholarship. Tickets may be purchased when you register for the Convocation. 

Challenge Luncheon Special Guest is Dr. Denise Murchison Payton, well known vocal artist whose beautiful soprano voice has a spell binding presence when ministering in song, will perform during the Challenge Luncheon.

The Candidate’s Breakfast is NEW for the Convocation. The Episcopal candidates and the General Officer candidates will be invited to attend and share their platform during the breakfast hour with the attendees. 

The Episcopal Candidate’s Forum will be led by Mrs. Katherine Burrell. The candidates will respond to a series of questions provided by the committee. This will afford everyone the opportunity to learn how they plan to serve the AME Zion Church if elected.

The General Officer’s Forum will be led by Mrs. Stephany Ricks-Fields. You will have the opportunity to hear from the General Office Candidates as well. This forum will follow the same format as the Episcopal Candidate’s forum. It will also include a series of questions for each candidate to have an opportunity to respond. Both the Episcopal Candidates and General Officer Candidates’ forum will allow you to learn a little more about how they plan to move the AME Zion Church forward if elected to serve.

Also, NEW to the convocation is the Young Adult C.H.A.T. Session (Creating Honest Atmospheres Together). Mrs. Dottie Stevens, Chair and the YAI are planning this inclusive session so we might learn and grow together. The CLC/YA will have t-shirts for sale.  The proceeds of the T-shirts will support assisting one young adult per Episcopal district in attending the CLC Convocation. Everyone is asked to support the young adults by purchasing one or more t-shirts either for yourself or a young adult in your church, district or conference. You may pre-order your shirt with Dottie Stevens (dottie_stevens.yai@yahoo.com). T-shirt sizes small to large are $15.00 each, and X-Large to 4XL are $17.00 each. Please make your checks payable to the CLC. 

Social and Political Action Chair Ms. Queen Degraphenreid will share a presentation and provide voting information for you take home to share as it relates to the upcoming election in 2020.

Community Outreach: The CLC will partner with the Children’s Advocacy Center (Human Trafficking) for the CLC Community Outreach project. The CLC involvement and support for this community project is to provide items or snacks for younger and older children that are serviced by the CAC. Gift cards are also welcomed. Ms. Queen Degraphenreid serves as the CLC Community Outreach Coordinator.

Special Projects: The CLC will have Special Projects items to sell at the Convocation.  If you know of items you wish to purchase, please contact the office for any items you would like to order and have ready for you when you arrive. As a reminder, the new CLC Handbook/Study Guides are in and are only $12.00 each. Place your order soon!
